This paper presents a review of theoretical and empirical work from the 1990s about universities as objects of scientific and technological policy in Latin America. It is considered that such policy analysis has become a highly relevant and important issue because of the dimensions of the modifications in terms of institutions, resources and staff produced in recent years. In particular, Latin American universities have acquired prominence as the protagonists of the scientific and technological system, concentrating most of the research tasks and personnel. This research seeks to identify recent literature about how the university in Latin America has been explored in relation to issues relating to the politics of science and technology, and it is developed a typology of approaches to guide those interested in the topic to begin scientific inquiry. The study takes into account literature from the early-nineties to the present because of the relevance of this literature and the lack of studies about its systematization. It argues that there are three types of contributions around the Latin American university as an object of scientific-technological policy: the systemic approach, the institutional approach and the micro-social approach.
