Model organisms help us understand biological processes and provide insights applicable to other organisms. Birds are commonly used as model organisms. However, since most information comes from songbirds in the Northern Hemisphere, this limits our understanding of broader biological processes. Here we review existing knowledge on the biology of the Rufous Hornero (Furnarius rufus), a non-songbird found in southern South America. We highlight recent advances in research on its nesting, breeding behavior, and vocal communication, and propose promising new research questions. Finally, we discuss the potential of the hornero as a Neotropical model bird species.

The Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA) have been described as global temperature anomalies, though there is a scientific concern to estimate hydrological anomalies at these times and to know the nature of the transition between these events. In this contribution we present a hydroclimatic reconstruction for the last 2000 years using a pollen index derived from the relative abundance of Cyperaceae and Chenopodiaceae, from four shallow lakes located in the southeast of the Pampa plain. The hydroecological balance index suggests drier conditions than present between 50 BCE and 1500 CE, coeval with MCA. These conditions continue during MCA-LIA transition. A positive hydrological balance during LIA suggests similar or perhaps slightly more humid conditions than the present. This change is not completely synchronous with the proposed chronology for LIA, and hydroclimatic conditions appear to have varied considerably even among sites within the same climatic zone. During the last 100 years, the complexity of signals has not allowed disentangling climatic from anthropogenic factors affecting these aquatic ecosystems. The regional paleoclimatic synthesis allows proposing MCA as a homogeneous climatic event with generalized dry conditions, whereas LIA was more heterogeneous, with humid and dry conditions at different sites in the Pampa plain. The differences should not be interpreted as climatic discrepancies but rather as different expressions that may or may not be responding to the same climatic forcing.

Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is endemic to Latin America and is characterized by chronic inflammation ofcardiac tissues due to parasite persistence. Hypoxia within infected tissues may trigger the stabilization of HIF-1 and be linkedto ATP release. Extracellular ATP exhibits microbicidal effects but is scavenged by CD39 and CD73 ectonucleotidases, whichultimately generate adenosine (ADO), a potent immunosuppressor. Here, we comprehensively study the importance of HIF-1stabilization and the CD39/CD73/ADO axis, on CD4+ T cells with the cytotoxic phenotype, in facilitating the persistence ofT. cruzi. Myocardial infection induces prominent areas of hypoxia, which is concomitant with HIF-1α stabilization in T cells andlinked to early expansion of CD39+CD73+CD4+ T cell infiltrating population. Functional assays further demonstrate that HIF-1stabilization and CD73 activity are associated with impaired CD4+ T cell cytotoxic potential. RNA-Seq analysis reveals thatHIF-1 and purinergic signaling pathways are overrepresented in cardiac tissues of patients with end-stage Chagas disease. Thefindings highlight a major effect of purinergic signaling on CD4+ T cells with potential cytotoxic capacity in the setting ofT. cruzi infection and have translational implications for therapy.

Quantized gravito-magnetic charges from WIMT: cosmological consequences
(National Research Council Canada-NRC Research Press, 2014-09)

Using the formalism of Weitzenböck Induced Matter Theory (WIMT) we calculate the gravito- magnetic charge on a topological string which is induced through a foliation on a 5D gravito- electromagnetic vacuum defined on a 5D Ricci-flat metric, which produces a symmetry breaking on an axis. We obtain the resonant result that the quantized charges are induced on the effective 4D hypersurface. This quantization describes the behavior of a test gravito-electric charge in the vicinity of a point gravito-magnetic monopole, both geometrically induced from a 5D vacuum. We demonstrate how gravito-magnetic monopoles would decrease exponentially during the inflationary expansion of the universe.
