New evidence is presented regarding a particular class of historical lithic tools from archaeological sites excavated in the historic block of the city of Quilmes, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. In general terms, the Quilmes lithic assemblage includes a wide variety of artifacts, including, for example, marbles and meta-quartzites that may have been part of the historic buildings, as well as cobblestones and stone flints, among others. In this article, we focus on the analysis of slates blackboards and slates pencils recovered from the sites of the city’s first two schools, the plaza, and a nearby domestic context. The results aim to contribute to a better understanding of the historical processes of the formation of the nation-state and help assess the importance of educational institutions in the latter part of the 19th century in the city of Quilmes.
