The bicentennial of Mendelssohn’s birth on September 6, 1929 was a day of celebration throughout Germany. The homages to the “archetypal German Jew” were an opportunity to think again about the alliance between Judaism and German culture and the former’s role in the configuration of community identity. However, debates about the meaning of Mendelssohn’s thought and legacy reveal tensions and divergences in understanding Jewish and German identity in the interwar period. Ernst Cassirer paid homage to Mendelssohn with two short articles in which he spoke about Mendelssohn’s formative contribution to Germany’s intellectual heritage. This article analyzes the Cassirerian reflections of 1929 in order to determine the meaning of his recovery of the figure of Mendelssohn as a herald of a spiritual future.
