Animals populate many pages of travel stories, naturalist reports, and fiction in Latin American literature. In an era that seeks to question the “humanist” conception inherited from the Renaissance, it is interesting to examine the uses of animals that are present in 21st-century Spanish-language literature. In this article, we will do so from the perspective of avant-garde writing that is grounded in primitivist elements: the work of Pablo Katchadjian The Horse and the Gaucho, a series of short texts that present seemingly archaic settings close to–and in dialogue with–nature.
