This article analyzes the conditions that shape perceptions of work among young people from low-income neighborhoods, based on a case study of a group of young people from the Nueva York neighborhood in Berisso (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Using a qualitative methodology, it seeks to challenge the hegemonic discourse that stigmatizes young people from low-income neighborhoods. To this end, it addresses the polysemy of the neighborhood from the youth narratives that construct it as a «home» a «promise»,” and a «stigma».” These discursive forms translate into elements from which they construct their meanings about work: the sense of community, the bridging experiences that dialogue with the world of work, the repositioning with respect to labor mandates, territorial dispossession, disillusionment, and distrust of the discourses of the employer and political sectors. Broken promises are part of a history of disappointment in the region, causing mistrust among young people and exposing how the territory is a scene of disputes that directly impact their subjectivities and the way they understand work and shape their futures.
