This paper aims to highlight the imprint of the postulations of the influential late medieval theologian Jean Gerson on spiritual discernment in the thought and praxis of the reformer Teresa of Ávila. The proposal aims to show how the nun of Ávila proposed to his companions of order, from the hegemonic interpretive paradigm in the circles of high theological culture, some relatively accurate criteria for the exercise of discernment of spirits in the convents. Such criteria would have a dual purpose: first, heir to the disciplining mark scheme developed by the renowned theologian, control the cloistered space; secondly, in counterpoint with that intention, preventing any exogenous interference on the female cloister that, nourished by an inquisitive look, could display their disciplining impetus to the new reform on expanding. Thus, this intellectual construct based on suspicion and that could clip the wings to the novice barefoot nuns, was rechanneled for its own benefit, trying to neutralize the distrust expressed by a largely reluctant theological corporation.
