In this article, we present the progress of an ongoing investigation focused on how the Public Defense Office of the City of Buenos Aires records and manages interventions in incidents where they identify practices that can be classified as “institutional violence”. Our interest is to describe and analyze the work processes of this bureaucracy, which are oriented toward the production of information about institutional violence to generate knowledge about this phenomenon and, if appropriate, channel this data into judicial and/or administrative actions, with the dual purpose of punishing those responsible for such incidents and supporting the victims’ demands for justice. By analyzing these work processes, we seek to shed light on how statehood manifests itself, paying attention to the knowledge, classifications, decisions, and assessments that, intentionally or not, influence the greater or lesser visibility, and therefore attention, of their target population.
