The article analyzes the epistemic and argumentative potential of academic orality in simulated thesis defenses at the graduate level. From a qualitative approach, fifteen oral presentations delivered by doctoral students within a graduate course are examined, evaluated according to three dimensions: pragmatic, global, and local (Padilla, Douglas, Lopez, 2011). The study is grounded in theoretical contributions that conceive the thesis defense as a postgraduate academic genre within a scientific community. The results show a high level of performance and highlight the relevance of simulation as a formative instance that fosters the evolution from expository to argumentative positions and encourages the appropriation of disciplinary knowledge. It is concluded that the practice of simulation strengthens the construction of the thesis writer’s expert ethos and consolidates the epistemic function of academic orality.
