This article analyzes Franz Kafka's The judgment (1912) as the turning point [Durchbruch] in the consolidation of his narrative style. Through a comparison with the earlier sketch, The urban world (1911), it demonstrates how Kafka abandons the authorial and realistic narrator in favor of a rigorous single-perspective narrative (or, more precisely, internal focalization). Confined to the mind of the protagonist Georg Bendemann, readers experience the distortion of external reality caused by his unconscious processes. The text argues that the causal disproportion between the events and the condemnation, as well as the shock at the paternal severity, only become intelligible when we recover the repressed content—personified in the figure of the friend in Russia. Finally, it demonstrates how Kafka transforms the psychic conflict between conscious will and repression into pure literary form, founding the poetics of his classical expressionism.
