Over the last decade, the area of Sierras Chicas (provinceof Córdoba, Argentina) has been dealing with a sustained water crisis. In this article, we analyse a set of social changes that occurred in the context of what we have called the politics of water resources. These changes, both quantitative and qualitative, are explained in terms of a valorisation process that results in the creation of new social relations and institutions, and in the production of the region as a value –that is, as an objective expression of a new social configuration of the politics of water resources. This valorisation process is based on the recognition of the social necessity to actively intervene in matters related not only to the water crisis but also to a much larger set of problems concerning the environmental degradation of the area.
