It shows that these two problems are interrelated. Countries that induce an improvement in the participation of workers in income cause a deterioration of the current account, while trying to resolve the imbalances of the latter by means of adjustment in deficit countries tends to depress activity globally. The current alternatives are shown to be non-cooperative and very negative for the global economy, be they the IMF adjustment proposals or Trump’s “new” protectionist policies. An alternative of international coordination of redistributive policies is proposed, which, implemented sequentially, may be a superior solution to individual adjustment.
