This article examines a lost book of orders from the Jesuit province of Paraguay in the 17th century, using an index of the book’s contents as a fundamental source. The first section explains the relationship between writing and governance in the Society of Jesus; the second provides a detailed description of the index and the book of orders; the third explores the practice of collective reading centered on these materials, as it developed in the Guaraní missions. The central hypothesis of the article is that the book of orders functioned both as a technology for adapting normative knowledge to local realities and as a technology of subjectivation, reinforcing the identity and discipline of the Jesuits.
