In the 1970’s, Latin Americanist criticism pushed to the limit the tension between two apparently contradictory objectives: to break down the cultural heterogeneity of the continent and, at the same time, to reaffirm its fundamental unity. After the dictatorships, a process of critical mourning for the lost place of literature and intellectuals in society emerged, marked by a deep ambivalence towards the integrating project and towards the Latin American ideal itself. This article argues that the central features of the Latin Americanist cultural integration project —the last regional incarnation of an imaginary that we could call the Paradigm of Tradition— allow us to establish a contrast with the current critical imaginary. This imaginary, which we could call the Archive Paradigm, has facilitated in recent years a different re-politicization of the arts and criticism, thus overcoming the melancholy of post-dictatorial mourning.
