Abstract

In multiple-document reading tasks, the critical use of the sources of the information is considered a high-level strategy that helps to decide what to trust and how to use what is read. However, the use of this strategy is variable, even among university students. This work aimed to examine a specific type of source use, namely, the contextualization of text content and embedded sources based on the document source’s trustworthiness (high vs. low) and participation in a brief workshop. Participants (n = 53) read two texts about treatments for a rare disease and wrote an essay selecting the best treatment and to justify their choice. Each text’s document source was either trustworthy or untrustworthy. While one group (n = 23) completed the task directly, another group (n = 30) first participated in a brief workshop discussing three epistemic criteria for evaluating sources. In both groups, the document source’s trustworthiness influenced treatment selection. Additionally, participants who attended the workshop included more trustworthy document sources in their essays and were more sensitive to the manipulation of the document source when evaluating the trustworthiness of the embedded source, compared to the control group. Finally, the justifications provided by the workshop group were more analytical than those of the control group. In conclusion, university students’ strategic use of multiple layers of sources varied depending on the evaluative task context, underscoring the potential of targeted instructional interventions.
