In this paper I reflect on the operation of the implicit and inferential norms that regulate land use in rural communities northern of Santiago del Estero (Argentina). The difficulty in studying this type of norms, neither emanating from an established authority nor formulated in binding terms, lies in distinguishing them from mere regularities in behavior arising from habit or strategic calculation. I address this difficulty by analyzing brief narratives about conflicts between neighbors over the use of territory, in which the subjects themselves make evident the imperative nature of such norms. I highlight some recurring topics in the normative argumentation of these narratives and outline the ways in which subjects process, and eventually resolve, their conflicts in a context in which there is no authority with the power of adjudication or sanction.
