The chronicles that some foreigners who lived in Paraguay wrote are often used as a source to reconstruct the political history of the time. In this opportunity we do not seek to analyze them to exalt or condemn the figure of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia. Instead, we propose to study them to reveal political concepts and representations about Paraguay. The need for recognition of independence and sovereignty showed the scope and the limits of the policy of isolation. The image of a Paraguayan exceptionality is nuanced when representations are understood together with the debates and conflicts that took place in the region between the fall of the viceroyalty and the consolidation of national states.
