The recent shift in museums’ focus toward their audiences and the communities they serve has led to the emergence of professionals with specialized knowledge and experience in education; among them is the museum educator. This study, conducted using a qualitative approach, sought to understand the social representations held by a group of museum directors regarding education within the museum context and to examine their views and expectations concerning the professional profile of the museum educator. The findings indicate a clear alignment between the identified social representations and the proposed profile of the museum educator. The study concludes that the museum educator should be a professional whose disciplinary training is grounded in the museum’s specific heritage domain and who also possesses the educational and pedagogical competencies necessary to effectively engage diverse audiences.
