Urban informality can manifest in multiple ways: ownership, legal, construction, and/or urban planning. It is explained by various factors, key among them being differential access to land, the characteristics of the real estate market, and the actions of the State. In Latin America, this problem is often associated with precar-ious housing and lower-income sectors of the population. However, this is not the only type of informality found. The concept of informality is also present in expansion patterns linked to middle- and upper-income sectors. This work aims to analyze the diverse manifestations of urban informality in the periphery of La Plata, highlighting that this phenomenon encompasses multiple dimensions that extend beyond precarious neighborhoods. From a theoretical and empirical approach, we seek to demonstrate that informality is not limited to lower-income populations, but also includes other types of urban development, such as gated communities and undivided lots, which, although they may be associated with middle- and upper-income sectors, also operate outside the established normative and regulatory framework.
