In this paper, desiderative relations in Western Toba are analysed from a functionalist perspective (Cristófaro 2003, Lehmann 1988, 2002, Bybee 1985 y Bybee et. al. 1994). Two distinctive stress patterns and two morphosyntactic contexts of use of the lexeme composed by the segments hetake are described. Hetáke I find’ is the verb ‘to find’ inflected for first-person singular type I, and hétake ‘to want’, invariant for person and number, occurs before a clause which encodes the desired state of affairs. The construction «hétake plus desired state of affairs» not only has a desiderative meaning, but also may convey prediction or attribution of intention to a third person on the part of the speaker, i.e., it is close to a future. Besides, this desiderative construction is compared to the ones used in other southern Guaycuruan languages: Abipón (Najlis 1966), Mocoví (Gualdieri 1998: 297-298), Pilagá (Vidal 2000: 282-283), and Toba from the Chaco province (Censabella 2002: 208, Messineo 2003: 84-86). This comparison allows the description of the desiderative encoding device in Western Toba as the expression of a synchronic, intermediate stage in a coalescence process of the main desiderative verb and the dependent one.
