Bats face threats such as habitat loss, destruction of their roosts, and conflict with humans. To counteract these threats RELCOM (Latin American and Caribbean Network for the Conservation of Bats) promotes the recognition of Areas of Importance for the Conservation of Bats (AICOM). This work presents a new AICOM, Camping Samay Cochuna, in the Yungas of Tucumán. The campsite has a colony of bats on the roof of a building, which causes conflicts with tourists due to bad smell, noise and prejudice against bats. To determine which species occupied the building and its surroundings, the warm-humid and cold-dry seasons of the years 2021, 2022 and 2023 were sampled. Jointly, informative talks on bats and conservation were given to tourists and campsite staff. In total eight species were recorded, of which six use the roof as a refuge. In warm-humid seasons, 90% of the females of Tadarida brasiliensis and Myotis dinellii captured coming out of the roof were pregnant, demonstrating that they used the shelter as a breeding site. The Samay Cochuna Campsite falls within the RELCOM criteria to recognize an AICOM, as it contains a refuge used by one or more species as a breeding site and because the bats are in danger of being exterminated due to conflicts with visitors. Its recognition, 10 septembre 2023 (A-AR-021), implies a great contribution to the conservation of bats and a valuable environmental education tool.
