Since the late 20th century, the global expansion of the road movie genre has been determined by the adaptive capacity of an ideological and representational matrix rooted in the United States to different economic and social realities. Critical reinterpretation and/or hybridization between the genre’s original content and local contributions from other countries or regions are the primary characteristics of its transnational expansion. In order to investigate the evolution of the road movie as an expansive genre matrix, this article examines and analyzes different approaches that encompass the origins and principal modalities in American and global cinema, as well as the approach to the genre in Latin American countries. Meanwhile, a third approach explores the rural road movie based on a trilogy of contemporary Argentine films: Trenque Lauquen (Laura Citarella, 2022), Los Delincuentes (The Criminals, Rodrigo Moreno, 2023), and Mixtape La Pampa (Andrés Di Tella, 2023). This section of the essay will analyze the critical rewriting of the genre circumscribed to an «other» space-time, as well as investigate the narrative determinations traced by the films (search, escape, investigation) and the ideological positions regarding an environment that debates between the countryside and the city.
