The COVID-19 pandemic hits a weakened and chronically declining country. The health crisis that hit Italy in the first half of 2020 exposed pre-existing contradictions and deepens economic, territorial, and gender inequalities. Although the central government did not stop expressing that "siamo tutti nella stessa barca" and proclamations such as "insieme ce la faremo" or "ne usciremo migliori" were repeated like a mantra on social networks, the only thing that seems to be made explicit is that the National unity does not exist. After the end of the strictest phase, and after a "rare" summer, autumn comes with new challenges. "In medias res", some preliminary reflections are presented on the impact of the pandemic on the social fabric of Italy, and in particular of the Southern regions that, historically, suffer the greatest structural disadvantages.
