This article reviews public policies with a gender perspective applied in higher education and science in Mexico. Currently, the future of public policies for gender equality is contested. The context demands a review of the actions implemented to clarify their potential and limitations, rethinking their existence in increasingly unequal societies that are less inclined to defend equality measures: this is precisely the objective of this article. Using a methodology that systematizes and analyzes secondary sources, it offers a panoramic view of the legal changes and actions implemented at the national government level from the seventies to the present. The conclusions reveal five challenges for the future: i) confronting institutional practices concealed by masculinized power networks; ii) generating a system of national indicators to address the fragmentation and isolation of gender policies; iii) the importance of research on institutional responses to overcome gender violence in Mexican universities and scientific circles; iv) overcoming legislative regulation as a gender mainstreaming in Mexico; and v) the incorporation of inequalities experienced by sex-gender diversities from public policy.
