The article examines the presence of mermaids in early modern cartography in relation to their apparent dislocation from the Old World to the New and the debate on the scope and limits of classical knowledge during the early modern period. It argues that, like other markers in cartography, mermaid iconography reflected a series of transformations in the ways the terrestrial globe was conceived between the late 15th and mid-17th centuries. This involves, first and foremost, a distancing from the functions traditionally attributed to iconography in maps not necessarily intended for navigation.
