The aim of this work is to determine Plutarch’s opinion about the convenience of political discussions during the symposium. I will analize Quaestiones convivales 714a1-716c2, where the characters, in the context of a banquet, give their positive opinion about the benefical effects of wine in political talks. I will analize in comparison the treatise Praecepta gerendae reipublicae, since it offers a general vision about Plutarch’s political ideas. I maintain that the positive assessment of the symposium as a propitious deliberative space is a reflection of the authors’ conviction that politics should be based on unity and philia; accordingly he uses the image of the symposium as a metaphor of that conception. On the basis of the expressed ideas, the paper proposes a metaliterary interpretation of the passage.
