A century ago, Ricardo Levene published his Introducción a la historia del derecho indiano, a book that constituted a foundational milestone for what would come to be considered a new discipline and which consolidated a way of understanding legal history. Assuming this 1924 work as the point of arrival of this study, I intend to give an account of the predominant conceptions that characterised the beginnings of the discipline in Argentina and that preluded Levene’s work. First, I will offer some coordinates concerning the constitutional organisation of the country, the emergence of the first historical narratives, as well as the links between history and law in that context. Secondly, I will analyse the epistemic conditions that marked the birth of Argentine legal historiography, focusing on the work of those who preceded Levene in this specific field. Finally, I will try to raise some questions about the way in which Levene was able to capitalise on some of those precedents during his early research, which preluded his foundational work of 1924.
