This paper proposes an approach to the diffusion of automobile use in the National Territories of Chubut and Río Negro during the first decades of the 20th century. Documentary records of diverse typologies are analyzed and articulated, showing complex experiences with the introduction of mechanical means of locomotion, with particular emphasis on monitoring vehicle use by state institutions and agents. The introduction of automobiles for the transportation of people and goods in Patagonia was the subject of intense debate regarding its advantages and disadvantages. Among other objections, it was often argued that their costs were high and that they could suffer a multitude of mechanical contingencies during journeys. State agencies early on postulated that animal-drawn means of transport had been rapidly replaced by brand-new imported automobiles. However, many Patagonian residents continued to opt for animal transport, while cars still required the complementary use of draft animals for decades.
