According to their promoters, structural reforms implemented with varying intensity in Latin America in the nineties were intended to achieve a more efficient production through market deregulation, economic liberalization and privatization of the main enterprises. Hence the activity governing institutions of the Argentinean oil market were abolished and the state oil company YPF was privatized. This paper describes this process and seeks basically to analyze the consequences of the reforms in the domestic sector dynamics. In the light of more than twenty years, it aims to provide evidence to ponder the results of the total prevalence of the market and withdrawal of the state from a strategic sector such as that of hydrocarbons.
