The present article analyzes all occurrences and the context in which appear evaluations made by others of the cruel actions of kings Pedro I and Enrique II in the Pero Lopez de Ayala’s Chronicle. The detailed analysis allows to highlight the subtle strategies deployed by the Chancellor to convert Pedro I in a counter-model of the monarch’s figure and to mitigate the Enrique II’s allegedly arbitrary actions. To do this, the text simultaneously considers two sensitive aspects: the development into the text of an instance of moralizing and the constitution of a Castilian identity based on the representation of social individuals as witnesses to the king’s actions.
