The freshwater resources available per person have decreased by more than 20% in the last 20 years due to population growth and the exacerbation of climate change. Specifically, in Argentina, lakes and reservoirs in the central-northern part of the country have accelerated their natural processes of siltation and eutrophication, with high nutrient loads, high concentrations of chlorophyll-a and recurrent algal blooms. There are different criteria to determine the trophic status and water quality of these systems, such as biological indicators, trophic indices and the determination of physicochemical and biological parameters. In this work, interpolation techniques using geographic information systems (GIS), such as the inverse of the weighted distance (IDW), were used to obtain spatial distribution maps of the variables temperature, water transparency and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the Río Tercero reservoir (Córdoba). This work demonstrated how environmental factors and anthropic intervention accentuate eutrophication processes in water resources and that the potential use of GIS and the spatial interpolation method, through the generation of continuous surfaces from discrete data, facilitate the collection, management, manipulation, analysis, modeling and representation of data to solve complex planning and management problems.
