This article addresses the disputes over the past of the province of Santa Cruz, in particular, and of Southern Patagonia, in general, from the historiographical field at a time of disciplinary consolidation at the local level. To this end, we propose, on the one hand, to study the book Los dueños de la tierra en la Patagonia Austral, 1880-1920, by Dr. Elsa Mabel Barbería and, on the other, to analyse the author’s own political-institutional trajectory, a pioneer in the study of regional history in southern Argentina. For the first objective, we work from the materialist analysis of discourse; the second is approached from the perspective of institutionalisation. Through an unprecedented heuristic work that documents the history of land distribution in the region and its impact on the conflict between the white and the indigenous, Barbería disputes with traditional Patagonian historiography over the interpretation and production of the real.
