Aspect is a linguistic category that displays several formal manifestations. English deploys a wide array of resources encompassing inflectional markers, verbal phrases and the V + particle combination of the read on type. Here I focus on the latter case, outlining its basic characteristics and reviewing some of the accounts provided to explain its behaviour, particularly regarding the part the lexicon and grammar play in diverse linguistic phenomena. Then I discuss an alternative view of the matter linked to the conception of the lexicon and grammar as ends of a continuum. I argue that considering this construction in a process of grammaticalization allows us to fathom not only many of its peculiarities but also those pertaining to other structures used to express aspect in English. Lastly, I contrast the facts with cross-linguistic evidence to speculate on a grammaticalization pattern founded on metaphorical principles.
