In this paper, the presence of graphical representations of indigenous routes and toponyms is analyzed in the historical cartography of the province of Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina. For this purpose, antique maps of Central Patagonia are surveyed and, from this documentation, a comparison can be made between the information provided by different authors in different historical times. It is also possible to observe a selective management of published data regarding the indigenous habitants of the Patagonian territory, especially for maps dated around the end of the 19th century. In this sense, the use of toponymy as a means for territorial appropriation is suggested. Finally, an argument will be made for the fact that toponyms are valid indicators of the way the landscape is perceived by different societies.
