This work proposes a strategy for estimating the torque exerted by a cyclist on an electric bicycle using a disturbance observer with band-pass estimation action (estimating the disturbance within a specific bandwidth). The approach is based on the longitudinal dynamic model of the bicycle, including the resistive load. From this model, the estimation strategy is developed using only the measurements available from a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), where the angular velocity serves as a state variable of the model and is determined from hall effect sensors located in the motor stator. This estimation strategy introduces an innovative approach by allowing the cyclist's torque (a time-varying signal) to be derived from the estimated disturbance without the need to calculate the effect of other constant or slowly varying loads present in the disturbance, such as gravitational torque. This reduces manufacturing costs and simplifies implementation compared to previous works, where determining this magnitude required knowledge of the terrain slope angle, necessitating additional sensors and estimation strategies. To validate this approach, the article demonstrates the effectiveness of the observer in the presence of slowly varying changes in terrain slope. It also verifies the independence of the observer's mathematical model from constant and quadratic components of the load torque, requiring only knowledge of the linear term of this magnitude for implementation. This estimator can be integrated with pedaling assistance strategies, and its validation includes experimental results obtained using a 26-inch electric bicycle equipped with a torque sensor on the crankset.
