This article addresses a series of confrontations locally dubbed as "Chubutazo", which occurred in December 2021 in the province of Chubut. These events, which included various protest demonstrations, police repression, and the burning of public buildings, forced the repeal of a law that sought to expand mining exploitation in the province. We explore these events from the hypothesis that the “Chubutazo” articulated the local population's own experiences of struggle, synthesizing diverse demands in the expression of their rejection of mining. We draw on the history of the local processes to characterize the different social groups involved, but we also describe the evolution of the mining sector since the 1990s. Specifically, we attempt to correlate these processes with structural changes in the objective disposition of the key social groups. We evaluate the economic structure of the province of Chubut to outline a potential local power structure and consider the protest processes of previous years to assess the existence of social accumulation. We draw on previous work, national and local statistics, and firsthand accounts as sources. We also draw on a review of newspapers and descriptions of the events of the "Chubutazo" compiled by various authors.
