The category “accumulation by dispossession”, associated with the work of David Harvey, is widely used in research programs in social sciences, and particularly in those that focus on the rural sector, to explain the installation or growth of capital dedicated to raw material production. This article, written as an essay, aims to discuss the concept –considering the works of Harvey and previous bibliography– and, in particular, to ponder the virtue of its application in Argentine agrarian studies. What is concluded and affirmed here is that there is a tendency to “stretch” the theoretical concept in such a way that it covers processes that are better explained by other categories, such as, for example, the most typical one, of reproduction of a capital on an enlarged scale. This study aims to contribute to a robust construction of the theoretical framework with which rural studies are approached, particularly to assess to the right extent the association between some (particularly serious) social and environmental problems and the normal development of the economic system, and not to more specific behaviors or situations.
