Both the Vida de San Millán de la Cogolla and the Poema de Fernán González record in their verses the divine help which endorses the Castilian count on his confrontation against the Muslim troops in the battle of SimancasHacinas-Toro. The resemblances that said episode presents in both poems define a matter that is claimed historical, and as a result, perceived as common. It is no less true, however, the clear displacement that can be found between the narration made by the arlantino cleric around 1250, and the one composed years before by Berceo. Thus, this paper seeks to address the ways in which these variants operate in the configuration of the Christian victory, specially emphasizing the appropriation that each of the poets makes of an event that had taken place more than three centuries ago, and in the particular —and diverse— significance they assign to it, in the context of their own historical time
