It is commonplace to consider Voltaire as an opponent of Castel de Saint-Pierre's theories and one of the main responsible for the reception of his image as that of a defender of impractical ideas, in particular his project of permanent peace between nations. The aim of this article is to show that, in any case, the assessment of the abbé's writings is less simple than what can be expected at first. The paper seeks to highlight the displacements and twists that Castel de Saint Pierre's figure undergoes in the writings of the French philosopher, especially from the 1950s onwards, when he revalues some aspects of his work. On the other hand, the text sheds some light on what could be considered Voltaire's own peace project.
