Departing from Weil’s studies and ideas about Greek geometry as a religious knowledge about the gods, this article is dedicated to a detailed exposition of the relations between measuring and chaos in Thales’ philosophy, aimed to stress the difference between ancient and contemporary mathematics regarding what is beyond the reach of their calculations. The research involves a close examination of those themes in Plato’s philosophy, one of our main sources to the few and fragmentary ideas attributed to Thales. This study is proposed as a necessary chapter for an understanding of the contemporary technics of global domination (such as money, physics and cybernetics) developed through mathematical guides.
