In this paper, within the framework of the Project «Public discourses on the pandemic in Latin America. Perception, understanding and social attitudes: the case of Argentina», we seek to describe certain uses of the coordinating conjunction «o», whose choice is justified in the situational context of a speech given by the head of government of the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the Covid-19 pandemic. This analysis shows the coordinating conjunction working in a similar way to the way a discourse marker works in contexts of mitigation and intensification in which it has not been described before. This provides a further example of the idea that it would be inappropriate to sharply differentiate conjunctions from discourse markers.
