Abstract

From the perspective of intellectual history, this article addresses the crisis of Marxism in the late 1970s in Latin Europe and its forms of appropriation within the Mexican educational field, based on the thought of Antonio Gramsci. The crisis of Marxism during that period marked a true turning point in the trajectory of critical theory by openly questioning the fundamental pillars of its paradigm. Mexico became the main Latin American space for the reception of the debate on this crisis, but also for discussions surrounding Gramscian thought. The article’s hypothesis is the following: although the phrase “crisis of Marxism” was not frequently used in the Mexican pedagogical field, the theoretical and educational elaborations articulated in Gramscian terms during that period can only be understood within the context of that crisis. In this way, the crisis of Marxism functioned as a problem that structured Gramscian pedagogical attempts to respond to a paradigm in crisis. Although with the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 the crisis of Marxism turned into collapse and a new cycle of debate began, it is argued that some of the initiatives analyzed in the article laid the foundations for ways of using Gramsci in Latin American educational research.
