The objective of the present study was to analyze the induction of chromosome aberrations by the mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OTA). The frequency of structural chromosome aberrations (SCA) and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) in pig lymphocytes, as well as the induction of aneuploidy by means of the anaphase-telophase test in CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells) cells was evaluated. Three doses of OTA were tested: 0,25; 0,50; 1,00 µg/ ml. The cytogenetic analysis of pig lymphocytes showed only a significant increase in the frequency of monochromatid breaks in relation with control group (p<0.01). On the other hand no significant differences for SCE were observed (p<0.05). The frequencies of lagging chromosomes and fragments induced by the three tried doses of OTA were not increased in significant form respect to the controls (p > 0,05), and the frequency of chromatin bridges was increased slightly, being in the significance limit. In addition, the based on the above background and the results obtained could suggest that the carcinogenic action of OTA should be more epigenetic mechanisms that genetic.
