“El escritor argentino y la tradición” is a polemical text, which tries to evict its opponents from the space of translation and cultural transfers. According to Borges, right-wing nationalists (but also left-wing writers) try to erase their own translation operations, and are actually unable to reflect on their own appropriation of foreign literatures. Nonetheless, right-wing nationalism explicitly inscribes “Argentine literature” in the “Western tradition” and therefore necessarily thinks about translation and cultural transfers. A similar process is observable in left-wing writers and intelectuals, whom Borges also derides. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how, based on a certain notion of literary autonomy, Borges constructs a space for “Western tradition” that excludes the interventions of other translators and cultural agents.
