Pesticides are a frequent worldwide poisoning cause due to their wide spreading and use. The aim of this paper was to describe and analyzed data from 184 patients seen for acute pesticide poisoning at the Toxicology Department of the Municipal Health Bureau of the city of S. M. de Tucumán during 2001-2002. The poisonings were diagnosed by anamnesis and clinic exploration and lab-confirmed using thin-layer chromatography and enzymatic methods. Poisoning motivation (occupational, environmental, food and suicide attempts), age, sex, pesticide type and incidence area were analyzed. Motivations were: occupational (OP) (39%), suicide attempts (SA) (25%), food (FP) (18%) and environmental (EP) (18%). 94% of OP were males and 82% of SA, females. 94% of EP affected people under 20 years of age. In 58% of the cases organophosphate pesticides were involved. Results show the importance of making workers and population in general aware of the pesticides use and of limiting and strictly controlling the trade of such products.
