The subordination of the city to capitalist development and its incessant need to absorb surplus production implies a process of constant urban growth based on the destruction and reconstruction of cities and the serious social, environmental and political effects associated with this dynamic. For this reason, capital appropriates common urban spaces with the intention of ensuring the necessary conditions for the production-reproduction of capitalist relations (SANTOS JUNIOR, 2014). In this framework, in this article we focus on one of the modes of production and reproduction of capitalist relations: the accumulation by dispossession (HARVEY, 2004) of the urban commons by business groups. For this, the central objective of our work is to map and reflect on different backgrounds, both theoretical and empirical, that positioned from a critical paradigm have addressed the urban commons and its relationship (conflict) with capital and the effective exercise of the right to the city.
