This study sets out to examine the links between phenomenological theory and certain key tenets of modern Empiricism, focusing specifically on the philosophies of M. Merleau-Ponty and D. Hume. We study, first, the empiricist thesis of the primacy of perception as the origin and foundation of all knowledge and its echoes in Husserl’s thought and in Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology. Second, we examine Merleau-Ponty’s critique of the empiricist notion of simple sensation, highlighting the fact that it plays a problematic role in Hume’s overall philosophy due to its cartesian origins.
