This paper presents partial results from a qualitative research on working-class households’ coping strategies during the 1990-2000 economic hardship in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. Labor-income generating activities developed by both members of 24 married couples with dependent children and 12 lone mothers are analyzed. 34 in-depth interviews and life-histories conducted in 2000 provided information on family and work trajectories. With lowered family budget, women’s economic contributions and roles increased their relative value due to their intensified efforts, as much as to the lesser opportunities available to men. The unemployed mature men’s rigid identity as (good) providers reinforced the effects of the existing barriers from the demand side in preventing their likelihood to re-join the labor force. Women’s identities as mothers, housewives, and household’s budget administrator facilitated their ability to provide through mobilizing scarce resources and opportunities in order to developing, intensifying, and diversifying their supply in the informal economy. They did it so by means of transforming their formerly restricted and constraining female relations and environments, into social capital, economic relationships and local markets.
