The idea that, for prison officers, part of the experience of working in prisons is infused with feelings of lack of social prestige and social isolations is present in the literature which deals with this occupational group. This feelings are connected, in turn, with the existence of socially extended images which construct the work of prison officers as a tainted occupation. Meanwhile, this connection between taint and work has been worked in investigations dealing with the problem of identity in tainted occupations. These last were made in the field of occupational sociology and use the concept of "dirty work" as a tool to describe and analyze the sources and effects of taint in certain occupations. The present paper seek to connect both fields and understand the work of prison officers as "dirty work" and by doing this, advance in the understanding of the way in which prison officers working in prisons in the Province of Santa Fe construct their occupational identities.
