This article reconstructs the political dynamics of the Justicialist Party (Partido Justicialista, PJ) in Tandil between 1982 and 1984. The period begins with the party’s reorganization, encompasses Peronism’s first defeat in free elections, and concludes with the internal split that reshaped the party. Within this framework, the article examines the political practices employed by different party actors in their efforts to secure political representation. It also analyzes the interpretations and consequences of the electoral defeat for Peronism in Tandil, as well as the strategies and initiatives undertaken to regain its lost majority. Drawing on biographical reconstructions, the study explores the characteristics of the local political leadership and the importance of personal prestige in shaping the dynamics of the local PJ. Finally, it offers new perspectives on the emergence and nature of the Peronist Renewal movement while critically reassessing existing interpretations of the Justicialist Party during the 1980s.
